When Blown-In Beats Foam
Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass fed through a hose by a machine. In an open attic it is spread to an even depth; in a closed wall it is packed tight through small holes so it fills each stud bay and resists air movement. For a lot of Omaha houses, especially older homes with plaster walls and nothing inside them, blown-in insulation is the most practical upgrade available.
Empty walls in older neighborhoods
Omaha grew west after the 1970s, but the older parts of the city, including midtown and South Omaha, along with older Council Bluffs streets, are full of houses built before wall insulation was standard. Spray foam needs the wall opened up. Dense-pack cellulose does not: we drill a row of holes from outside under the siding or from inside, fill each cavity to the right density, and plug and patch the holes. HomeGuide lists dense-pack cellulose at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot.
Attic top-ups
Loose-fill fiberglass or cellulose over a sealed attic floor is the cheapest way to reach the R-49 that Nebraska's code lists for new ceilings. HomeGuide puts a blown-in attic at $900 to $3,600, and Fixr lists $1,750 to $5,500 for about 1,500 square feet.
Cellulose or fiberglass?
Cellulose is recycled paper treated with fire retardant. It packs densely, which helps it block air in walls. Fiberglass is lighter, does not absorb water as readily and does not settle as much in attics. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. We pick based on the space, and you can ask for either.
Before we blow
We check for knob-and-tube wiring, which should not be buried, and for vermiculite in the attic, which needs testing before it is disturbed. We also seal attic leaks before adding loose fill, because insulation on top of open chases does not stop the air coming through them.

Where loose fill and dense-pack fit best.
Dense-pack exterior walls
Cellulose blown at high density into closed stud bays through small holes.
Attic loose fill
Cellulose or fiberglass added over a sealed attic floor to the target depth.
Kneewall and slope cavities
Closed sections of finished attics filled where they can be reached.

HomeGuide (November 2025) and Fixr (August 2025) supply these national ranges. Wall height, siding type, depth added and how much sealing is needed change the cost. We give you a written estimate after the visit, and that number is the price.
How Blown-In Jobs Go
1. Check the cavities
We confirm walls are empty, look for blocking and check wiring before drilling.
2. Seal the attic
Attic leaks are sealed and baffles placed before loose fill goes down.
3. Blow and pack
Walls are filled to density; attics are filled to depth with markers.
4. Patch and clean
Holes are plugged and patched, and dust is cleaned up.

Blown-In Wall & Attic Insulation Questions
Can you insulate walls without removing plaster?
Yes. Dense-pack cellulose goes in through small holes drilled from outside or inside, which are then plugged and patched. It is the usual approach for older Omaha homes.
Does blown-in insulation settle?
Loose fill settles a little in attics, which is why we blow a bit over the target depth. Dense-pack in walls is installed tight enough that settling is minimal.
Is blown-in cheaper than spray foam?
Per square foot, yes. National guides put blown-in at roughly $1.00 to $3.80 per square foot versus $1.50 to $5.00 for foam. Foam still wins in rim joists, roof decks and small spaces that need an air seal.
